Taco Seasoning Recipe

By The Petite Plantation - July 25, 2017

I love trying to find new things we can easily make ourselves. The first was homemade bread, soon after I learned to make my own strawberry jam, pickles and even toothpaste! But as a minimalist homestead dreamer, I am also trying to streamline our collection of favourite go-to meals and make our lives, and routines, simpler.

Seems contradictory, doesn't it? To add more tasks and more projects to our days, when it is easier and simpler to just buy these items. To be honest, it can be a challenge to add more do-it-yourself projects, like keeping enough toothpaste in the house for a family of four, but when we have opportunity to not bring home more chemicals or preservatives, we take it. And learning to make things yourself is a vintage skill that saves you cash!

One of my favourite go-to meals is Taco Salad, which is a perfect meal this time of year because the lettuce in my garden is jammin'! It is a great ketogenic friendly meal and the kids get a kick out of it.

Since taco salad is a weekly occurrence, I make my own seasoning for tacos to limit the amount of preservatives in our meals. It tastes great, just like the stuff you get in the taco dinner kit at the grocery store.

To make my taco salad, I simply place lettuce on each plate, top with lean ground beef cooked with the taco seasoning {recipe below}, shredded cheese, a couple dabbles of sour cream and salsa!

This taco seasoning recipe is simple, makes enough for a few meals, low in salt & free of preservatives!

Taco Seasoning

1/2 cup chili powder
1/4 cup onion powder
2 tbsp cumin
2 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp paprika
1 tbsp ground black pepper
1 tbsp salt

The method is simple, toss all ingredients into a jar and shake it! When making tacos, we are two heaping tablespoons and a half cup of water to cooked ground beef. This helps the seasoning really distribute over the meat. Enjoy!

We've also used this seasoning in meat loaf and on chicken fajitas!
